Gougane Barra ( Irish Guagán Barra , "the crevice of the [Fionn-] Barra") is a small settlement west of Macroom in County Cork , Ireland .

The name Guagán Barra goes back to Saint Finbarr (Irish Fionnbarra ), who is said to have built a monastery on an island in a neighboring lake in the 6th century. The remaining ruins date from around the beginning of the 18th century; In 1700 the priest Denis O'Mahony fled to the island. During the Penal Laws , Gougane Barra benefited from the remoteness, so that many Roman Catholic masses could be celebrated here.

The river Lee rises to the west of Gougane Barra . The area around Gougane Barra has been reforested since 1938; a forest area of 1.42 km² now exists here. A clapper bridge over the River Lee is nearby.
