The Green Wing Trompetervogel ( Psophia viridis ) is a 46 to 53 centimeter great representative of the family of trumpeter birds .

Appearance

These animals have black plumage except for the broad, green wings that give them their name. The metallic blue shiny breast plumage is very striking. The beak is gray or black. The strong legs are gray. In terms of plumage, the sexes do not differ from one another, with the males being slightly larger than the females. The weight of the individual animals is between 1 and 1.5 kilograms.

distribution and habitat

This species occurs in Brazil in the southern Amazon region and the extreme northeast of Bolivia .

Way of life

They feed on insects and windfalls, which have mostly been dropped by monkeys from higher levels of construction. Although they can fly well, they prefer to run away from the attacker on the ground when in danger. They are also good swimmers. They move through the rainforest in small groups, with a leader, in search of food and water. Life expectancy is around 10 years.

Reproduction

The nest is made in a tree hollow or in the crown of palm trees. Usually 2–5 white eggs with a rough shell are laid. After hatching, the young immediately start looking for food independently.

Hazards and protective measures

The green-winged trumpeter bird is classified by the IUCN as ( Vulnerable ) endangered. The reasons for this are logging, the conversion of their living space into agricultural areas and the expansion of human settlements. In addition, this species is also hunted. They react very sensitively to human disturbances and withdraw to parts of the forest that are still untouched by humans. To protect the species, several protected areas have been designated in their natural habitat.

use

The natives of the area keep these animals as pets. They also warn of dangers such as wild animals with very high-pitched shouts.
