Carrowntemple grave slabs

12 replicas of 14 early Christian grave slabs from Carrowntemple ( English Cross Slabs ) are not far from Lough Gara in a cemetery in the townland Carrowntemple ( Irish Ceathrú an Teampaill ) near Gorteen in County Sligo in Ireland .

There were two enclosures in Carrowntemple, both of which have been partially destroyed. On the Ordnance Survey map from 1837 a rectangular church building, called "Abbey", is drawn next to a cemetery, which is faintly visible on aerial photographs in the approximately 6 hectare area of the monastery. Two basement basements, which are now closed, are to the west of the church.

In the middle of the interior of the other enclosure are the remains of a medieval parish church of 9.4 × 6.4 m, some of which are up to a height of 3.1 m. The walls are 70 to 90 cm thick. The church probably stands on the site of an earlier wooden church.

Fourteen sandstone tombstones were found in the south and east of the church in the old cemetery. Between 1990 and 1992, Cillian Rogers made replicas of twelve of them; these were installed on site in 1992. The designs, derived from the Celtic Iron Age , are more elaborate than any other cemetery in County Sligo, except for Inishmurray , # 2 and 3. Some of the designs are excellent, sometimes unique, for various reasons. Symbolic representations include elliptical ribbons, knot patterns, simple crosses, circles, checkerboard patterns and triskeles . Plate no. 10 bears a unique figurative representation and is decorated with knot patterns on the reverse; it was meant to be placed upright. Plate # 3 is similar in design to one from Durrow's 7th century book. Many of the plates are classified in the 7th and 8th centuries. On plates No. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 11 the design is raised.
