Gravestone of the deacon Besontio

The tombstone of the deacon Besontio is now in the Catholic parish church of St. Severus in Boppard , a town in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The highest quality stone was in the 6./7. Dated century. In another opinion, it could also belong to the group of earlier Gallo-Roman gravestones.

description

The tombstone, 73 cm high and 69 cm wide, is dedicated to the deacon Besontio and his niece or granddaughter Justiciola. In October 1973 it was found in second use in two parts during excavation work in Boppard. Then it was attached to the west wall of St. Severus. The almost square limestone plate has a five-line inscription in the middle third of the field. Above it is a large Christogram flanked by two doves. Above each pigeon there is a Latin cross with triangular widened ends. The missing text parts of the reassembled stone halves were added and the letters, lines and figures repainted in red.
