The Granatium in Radenthein is an adventure museum in which the history, extraction and use of the garnet stone is presented.

history

The construction work on today's facility began in 2007 on the site of the former “Isola” costume factory. The Granat Gorge, near which grenades were mined until 1914, was made accessible for the first 200 m and part of the factory was converted into a museum. In May 2008 the Granatium was opened in the course of the state exhibition "Kärnten wasser.reich". The construction was co-financed by the federal government , the state of Carinthia and the European Union, as well as financially supported by the municipality, the Radenthein tourist association, the banks and Radenthein companies.

construction

In addition to the exhibition on mineralogy, the history of garnet mining and its use as a gemstone, there is a "garnet room", a gemstone cutting shop and a shop in the main building . A grenade tunnel connects the museum with the mining area. When hiking through the tunnel you come across a garnet vein and see some natural phenomena. A highlight is the "mining area", where visitors can dig garnet stones themselves and then have them refined in the gemstone cutting shop.

Concerts and weddings are always held in the Granatstollen.

location

The Granatium is in the Nock Mountains. The community is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Park Carinthian Nockberge and the Millstättersee tourist region. The Bad Kleinkirchheim region borders on the community.
