The Grand Hotel Continental was a luxury hotel in Munich that existed from 1892 to 1994.

history

The hotel was created by converting a "noble old aristocratic palace" on the corner lot Ottostraße / Max-Joseph-Straße and opened in 1892. In 1906 the interior was renewed on behalf of hotelier Max Diener based on designs by Ludwig Hohlwein . Around 1910/1911 there was an increase and the renewal of further room furnishings by Ino A. Campbell , Eduard Pfeiffer , Ferdinand Götz and Karl Pullich .

Well-known guests included Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary , Gustav Mahler , Thomas Mann , Gerhart Hauptmann and Rainer Maria Rilke . In the 1960s the hotel was used by many state visitors.

The first economic problems arose in the mid-1970s. In 1987, however, Gault-Millau counted the hotel among the twelve best in Germany. In 1994 the hotel had to close. The house of the Bavarian economy has stood on the property at Max-Joseph-Strasse 5 since 1997 ; the Conti restaurant located in it is reminiscent of the former hotel.
