Grand Hotel des Wagons-Lits

Grand Hotel des Wagon Lits in Beijing (after 1914)

The Grand Hotel des Wagons Lits (Beijing) was built in 1905 by the Compagnie Internationale des Grands Hotels , a subsidiary of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits in Beijing .

It was in line with the business policy of the sleeping car company to provide appropriate hotels for its clientele at important destinations of its luxury trains ( Ostend , Monte Carlo , Cairo, etc.). The company's First Grand Hotel in the embassy district of the Chinese capital was built in 1905 in the Flemish Gothic style, but soon proved to be too small and was replaced by a larger, more sober building before 1914. Brochures from the 1930s show a building in a delightful large garden. Today's Grand Hotel in Beijing has nothing to do with the traditional railway hotel described here.
