Grand Marnier ( French [ ɡʁɑ̃ maʁnje ]) is a French brand for various liqueurs from the Triple Sec / Curaçao family . Curaçao liqueurs are made from Caribbean bitter oranges . The best known variety is the cognac- based Cordon Rouge , the bottles of which are decorated with a red ribbon. It was developed by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle in 1880 and has an alcohol content of 40 percent by volume . Grand Marnier can be drunk straight, but is also often used in mixed drinks or for cooking.

In Germany and in numerous other markets, Grand Marnier is sold by the drinks group Diageo .

In 2016, the Italian Campari Group acquired control of the brand owner Société des Produits Marnier-Lapostolle (SPML) for € 684 million (€ 8.05 per share in cash), which achieved sales of € 152 million in 2015.

Selected varieties from Grand Marnier

  • Red Label or Cordon Rouge : The most popular and eponymous type of Grand Marnier is made from bitter oranges and 51% from cognac.
  • Triple Sec , Yellow Label or Cordon Jaune : This is the oldest Grand Marnier variant and goes back to 1827 when Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle made a Triple Sec liqueur. For a long time only known as Cordon Jaune , the liqueur is now offered again under the original name, but no longer colored with caramel as in earlier times . The base of the liqueur is neutral alcohol . In addition to bitter oranges, sweet oranges are also processed. The taste of the liqueur is therefore more comparable to Cointreau . Cordon Jaune is particularly suitable for mixing and cooking (as a "topping" for crepes etc.).
  • Louis Alexandre : This is a variant with cognacs from the Petite Champagne and Borderies areas. The Louis Alexandre is also less sweet compared to the Cordon Rouge. It owes its name to the company founder.
  • Cuvee du centenaire : This variety was created for the 100th anniversary of the company in 1927. Cognacs from Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne, which are up to 25 years old, are used.
  • Cuvee du cent cinquantenaire : For the 150th anniversary of the company in 1977, what is probably the finest Grand Marnier was created. Only cognacs from Grande Champagne that are up to 50 years old are used.

useful information

  • The production date is noted on all bottles. With Cordon Rouge , for example, you can find it on the banderole of the bottle neck. It is composed as follows: The first two digits after the L indicate the year of production, the three following digits the day of the year, followed by two digits that represent the hour. For example, L0606914 would mean that the bottle was manufactured in 2006, on the 69th day (March 10th) between 2:00 p.m. and 2:59 p.m.
