The Grande Hermine was an early modern ship of discovery that sailed under the French flag.

construction

The Grande Hermine was a so-called "round" caravel. There was a fort on the foredeck that protruded over the bow. The fore and mainmast only had a square sail, while the mizzenmast was equipped with a latin sail. An armament can be assumed for an explorer ship - however, details are currently not known.

history

The French navigator Jacques Cartier made several voyages of discovery with his flagship Grande Hermine towards the North American continent.

His first trip took him in 1534 to what is now Canada, where in 1541 he finally founded New France ("Nouvelle France") - the first French colony.

His second trip took him to the St. Lawrence River , which he sailed and explored with the Ermillon and Petite Hermine caravels .

A third trip should not have been successful.
