Graptolite Island (English for Graptolite Island ) is an 800 m long island not far from the southeast coast of Laurie Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located in the northeast section of Fitchie Bay .
Two islands are shown at this point on the maps of the British navigator James Weddell from 1825. Participants of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-1904) under the direction of the polar explorer William Speirs Bruce cleared up this error in 1903 and named the island after the numerous graptolite fossils found here.
