The hip saw is a small hand saw for making grooves , especially hip grooves , in wood joints. It has a distinctive curved handle that is held with both hands and it works on pull. There are versions with an adjustable depth stop to limit the cutting depth.

With the hip saw, the saw cuts are cut across the wood fiber for grooves and grooves before the material is worked out in the groove with a chisel and planer . The work of the saw on pull facilitates the creation of stepped flute grooves for invisible connections.
