Seskar ( Russian Сескар , Finnish Seiskari , Swedish Seitskär ) is an island in the eastern Gulf of Finland . It belongs to Kingisepp Rajon in Leningrad Oblast in Russia and is 80 km west of Saint Petersburg .
history
In 1903 the Seiskari community was spun off from the Koivisto community . It belonged to the Finnish province of Viipuri and was in the South Karelia region . In 1939 the island had 688 inhabitants.
With the Peace of Moscow in 1940, the island became part of the Soviet Union . This change of area was only ratified after the Second World War .
Today, the island and the sea area west of the island belong to the border area of the Russian Federation, for which a special permit from the FSB is required to enter and navigate .
