The Great Baikal Trail ( Большая Байкальская Тропа Bolschaja Baikalskaja Tropa ) is a long-distance hiking trail around Lake Baikal in Siberia ( Russia ). The path has been built on a voluntary basis since 2003 , the idea dates back to the 1970s. It was initially planned to create a 1,800 km long hiking trail according to international road construction standards, but now an approx. 2100 km network of trails is being built. A positive effect on regional infrastructure and environmental protection is expected. The Great Baikal Trail is not yet completed, but the first sections can already be used, such as the 100 km longFrolikha Adventure Coastline Track . Several work camps take place every year, during which volunteers from all over the world continue to build on the path. In the last 13 years, from 2003 to 2015, 211 projects were carried out with a total of 5,000 volunteers from 25 countries and 35 cities in Russia. More than 350 km of hiking trails were created.
