Permanent exhibitions

human and nature

The past of the region around Windhaag is traced on the top floor of the Green Belt Center in Windhaag near Freistadt. The topics range from the settlers, knights and colonizers of the 13th century to the inhabitants of the Freiwald, who until well into modern times had no landlord over them, to the farmers, forest workers and blacksmiths of the 20th century. The focus of the exhibition is on the living conditions of the population of the northern Mühlviertel, which were characterized by long winters, barren soils and cool summers. Evidence of this can be found in the forests around Windhaag, such as, for example, late medieval castles and settlements. The exhibition also addresses the disappearance of villages north of Windhaag from 1945 and the aspect of land management in the north of the Mühlviertel.

Iron Curtain

While the permanent exhibition on the second floor of the Green Belt Center is dedicated to the history of the northern Mühlviertel from the 13th to the middle of the 20th century, the exhibition on the first floor focuses on the period from the creation to the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and the development of this former border region into a largely protected area today.

The European Green Belt

The central part of the new Green Belt Center is an exhibition on the topic of “Green Belt Europe”, which runs across Europe over a distance of 12,500 km from the subarctic tundra to the Black Sea . The information center deals with the individual sections of the Green Belt under historical and scientific aspects. The subject is worked up methodically using images, film sequences and original objects. The exhibition is particularly concerned with the flora and fauna of the Green Belt. At the end of the tour, dangers and opportunities for the Green Belt and its flora and fauna are shown. The last stop of the exhibition is the future space, in which future life and energy models are presented.

architecture

The former Anton Bruckern School forms a unit with the extension, which is designed as a tower-like solitary structure made of wood. A ground floor extension serves as an event room. The three-storey tower is a striking feature of the Green Belt Center's architecture. A viewing platform on the roof allows a view of the landscape of the Austro-Czech border region. The connection to the existing Anton Bruckner School takes place on the upper floor and the attic in the form of a glazed bridge. The air space of the former staircase has been converted into a vertical green zone with a ground floor visitor lounge. The extension was designed as a pure wood structure on a reinforced concrete floor slab . The timber construction fulfills the requirements of the ecological planning specifications for an energy-efficient building type. The wood construction is clearly recognizable on the outside through naturally stained wood paneling and on the inside through the use of visible surfaces in wood.
