Greenland Connect is a submarine cable that connects Greenland with Canada and Iceland (indirectly Europe). The cable has a capacity of up to 96 wavelengths at a data rate of 10 Gbit / s each.
The landing points of the cable are in:
- Milton, Trinity Bay , Newfoundland , Canada
- Nuuk , Greenland
- Qaqortoq , Greenland
- Landeyjarsandur , Iceland
The cable is operated by TELE Greenland , the state incumbent local exchange carrier . The laying was carried out by the ships Mærsk Responder and Blue Castor ; the landing in Trinity Bay took place in July 2008. The construction of the 5000 km long cable connection cost around 90 million euros.
history
Until the cable was laid, Greenland was connected by a 2000 km long satellite and radio link (from the mountains above the coasts), over which the Internet traffic also ran. The state Tele Greenland has successively connected all places with more than 50 inhabitants to a new communication network, including cell phone masts in the coastal towns. (Due to the permafrost soil, overland connections are generally not laid as cables, but rather as microwave links.) At the same time, information portals for local health care and agriculture are set up - in the political sense this is seen as a prerequisite for Greenland's independence from the Danish protectorate, in which the administration has the options of the Internet . External communication was inadequate as internet traffic has doubled every year in recent years. However, the new submarine cable offers a capacity that goes far beyond the needs of Greenland (7000 times the previous connection). It is hoped to be able to sell the additional capacity for the connection between North America and Europe.
On May 3, 2013 there was a cable break between Milton and Nuuk.
