Greenleaf Whittier Pickard

Greenleaf Whittier Pickard ( February 14, 1877 - January 8, 1956 ) was an American engineer and pioneer of early radio and radio technology . He realized that buildings and other objects can reflect radio waves .

In addition, during research with crystals as receivers, he discovered that elements with a crystal structure such as silicon have the best semiconductor properties.

On August 30, 1906, he applied for the first patent for a silicon diode . The functionality of semiconductor components was only recognized much later.

In 1930 Pickard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
