Greenshot is a free open source - Screenshot - program for Microsoft Windows . It is developed by Thomas Braun, Jens Klingen and Robin Krom and was published under the GNU General Public License . The software is further developed and published on SourceForge .
The program is used to make copies of all or part of the screen content. The captured screenshot can be annotated and highlighted in the built-in image editor before the graphic is saved, sent by e-mail, printed or copied to the clipboard .
In 2013, Greenshot was available in 26 languages, with most of the translations being contributed by users of the program.
features
Screenshots
Various modes are available for creating a screenshot:
- "Photograph area": A part of the screen can be selected by drawing a green rectangle on the screen that indicates the area of the desired area.
- "Photograph last selected area" creates another screenshot of the last photographed area.
- "Photograph window" is used to photograph the active or a selected window (depending on user settings).
- "Take a picture of the entire screen" takes a screenshot of the entire screen area.
Image editor
If desired, the built-in image editor can be used to annotate and highlight the screenshot or to obscure details. Greenshot's image editor is a simple vector graphic editor, but it also provides some pixel-based filters.
In addition to tools for drawing simple shapes (rectangles, ellipses, lines and arrows), a text tool is also available. Special filter tools can be used to highlight text or areas; private data can be made illegible with the help of tools to make it unrecognizable ( pixelation / soft focus ). Each tool has different settings, e.g. B. Line color and thickness or the option "Shadow".
Further use of the screenshot
The use of the image editor is optional, all export options are accessible via the toolbar. This step can be skipped by changing the program settings so that the screen copy can be used directly without editing. The screenshot can either be copied to the clipboard as a bitmap , sent to a printer or saved to a file (with a user-defined file name). It can also be added directly as an attachment to a new e-mail message.
distribution
By mid-2018, SourceForge had downloaded the program around 7 million times. Greenshot is also available for download on many software portals from German magazines and publishing houses such as Heise online , Chip Online , Computerwoche and PC Praxis , as well as international download portals such as CNET .com.
Reviews
The CNET.com editors rated Greenshot 4.5 out of 5 stars in 2009, but criticized the poorly detailed program help and the lack of the ability to subsequently trim the screen copy in version 0.7, but recommended the program “to all users who want to quickly and want to take and edit screenshots in a simple way ”. The current version can now crop. Wolfgang Miedl came to the conclusion for Computerwoche that the production of "screenshots in series with a variety of comfort functions" with Greenshot was no problem, while Chip Online rated Greenshot with 4 out of 5 possible points and came to the conclusion: "If you take a lot of screenshots, will have a lot of fun with the open source tool Greenshot. ”But occasional users would also“ quickly appreciate the reduced workload ”.
