The Gregor Mendel Institute for Molecular Plant Biology GmbH (GMI) is a foundation of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and conducts basic research in various areas of development, chromosome biology and gene regulation in plants . Arabidopsis thaliana is the main test plant . It was founded in 2000 and since the beginning of 2006 at the Campus Vienna Biocenter in Vienna resident. It employs around 120 people.

The institute is named after Gregor Mendel , who completed his studies in Vienna in the middle of the 19th century and is known as the "father of genetics ".
