The border crossing Yeşilırmak (or transition Yeşilırmak or barricade Yeşilırmak ) is located in the western part of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and connects them with the area under control of the Republic of Cyprus . It lies on the main road to the Kokkina (Erenköy) exclave .

history

On June 26, 2009, at the 34th meeting of the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias as part of the Cyprus negotiations, it was decided that the seventh transition point should be opened. It was announced that the transition would open 7 months after the necessary infrastructure work had been completed. The crossings to the Kokkina (Erenköy) exclave are to be made under the direction of the United Nations .

On March 29, 2010, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias laid the foundation stone for a 5.5-kilometer stretch required to open the border crossing between Pirgo and Yeşilırmak. United Nations Cyprus Mediator Alexander Downer and UN Secretary-General's Special Representative Tayé-Brook Zerihoun attended the ceremony.

On October 14, 2010, the border crossing was opened with a ceremony by the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Derviş Eroğlu and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias . The opening ceremony was also attended by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle, the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer and US Ambassador to Cyprus Frank Urbancic.

Reactions

There were international reactions to the opening of the border crossing.

  • AKEL General Secretary Andros Kiprianu said it was an encouraging development, a new breach in the wall and a hope for the future.
  • European Commission Chairman José Manuel Barroso said that it is "very good news" and that it is evidence of a good path to the solution.
  • Turkey's Foreign Ministry said the decision to open the border crossing was a positive development.
