Gray Island ( English ; Norwegian Holmen Graa ; both sides for Gray Island ) is an island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands . It is 1 km south of Michelsen Island and 1.6 km south of Fredriksen Island .
The Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle gave it its Norwegian name when he surveyed the South Orkney Islands from 1912 to 1913. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations translated this into English after their own measurements in 1933.
