The Fredriksen Island ( Norwegian Fredriksens Ø ) is a 4 km long and 800 m wide island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located 800 m southeast of Powell Island .
The southern and central part of the island consists of sandstone and dark phyllite schist , while claystone can be found in the north . Especially in the northeast there are moss pads with peat underneath . Thousands of chinstrap penguins breed on the island .
The island was discovered by captains George Powell and Nathaniel Palmer in December 1821. The Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle named it when he surveyed the island between 1912 and 1913. The namesake is not known.
Fredriksen Island is part of the Antarctic Specially Protected Area ASPA-111.
