Greek house
The Greeks House was a trading yard of Greek merchants in Leipzig . Since the beginning of the 18th century, Greek silk, cotton and tobacco merchants came to the German markets, twice a year to the Leipzig trade fair. The building was opposite the trade fair office and also served trade fair visitors as an accommodation and meeting place. The term Greeks House is still used by the German-Greek Society Greeks House Leipzig e. V. used.
The building in Katharinenstrasse no. 4 was a trading courtyard built in 1640 with a closed baroque facade facing the street; it looked like the adjoining house no. 2. At that time, Katharinenstrasse was “the most magnificent street in the city” . In the Leipzig Baroque work , Nikolaus Pevsner describes the building as qualitative and lively in the ornamentation. The rear courtyards were rented to merchants, there were also inns in the complex and an Orthodox church since 1858. Besides Greek, this also served Russian and Romanian believers. The community consisted of merchants and students. The theologian Eugenios Voulgaris lived in the house on his Leipzig ward in 1763.
On December 4, 1943, it was destroyed by bombing . Today there is a new building on the site, which among other things houses the famous milk bar Pinguin . Since 1999 there has been a memorial plaque on the building that refers to the former Greek house.
