Greece feels connected to Russia through cultural closeness. In 2002 there were almost 100,000 people of Greek origin in Russia .

Political Relations

Contacts between countries are persistent and strong.

There is an inter-administrative cooperation between the two countries, which mainly focuses on the fields of economic , scientific , industrial and technological cooperation.

In July 2018, Greece announced the deportation of two Russian diplomats and banned two other Russians from entering the country. Greece and Macedonia had suitable themselves in June 2018 in the dispute over the name "Macedonia" . After the agreement on the name dispute, Macedonia is allowed to join NATO . Russia rejects this and has stoked resistance to the naming agreement in Greece. Athens accuses Russian diplomats of meddling in the internal affairs of Greece. The diplomats are said to have tried to bribe Greek state officials and to have promoted demonstrations against the agreement with Macedonia. This is part of a larger campaign to expand Russia's influence in Greece, including through the activities of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society . The latter is particularly keen to exert greater influence on Russia in the Orthodox monastic republic of Athos . Russian media have also promoted the establishment of a new populist party under the leadership of Dimitris Kammenos from the right-wing populist Anexartiti Ellines . The new party is supposed to block the naming agreement.
