from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large nativity scene by Anzi (it. Presepe poliscenico stable di Anzi ) is the fourth largest nativity scene in Europe. The multi-scene, figurative representation is located in the small village of Anzi , Basilicata , in the former rectory on Via Vittorio Emanuele . It was realized in 1994 by the artist Antonio Vertulli and some volunteers.

The scenes

The ten scenes tell the story of the birth and childhood of Jesus:

  • Annunciation to Mary
  • census
  • The three kings in Herod's palace
  • Annunciation to the Shepherds
  • Bethlehem Nativity Grotto
  • Escape to Egypt
  • Child murder in Bethlehem
  • Presentation of Jesus in the temple
  • Nazareth with the house of Mary
  • The twelve year old Jesus in the temple.

The biblical plot is depicted with native backdrops. Vertulli designed the scenes with shortened perspectives of Calvello, the Sassi and the rock-hewn churches of Matera, Castelmezzano, the Dolomites and some landscapes from the Potenza area. Nazareth is the village of Anzi where the nativity scene is located. The paper mache figures were made in Lecce .
