The Great Synagogue in Bila Tserkva , a Ukrainian city ​​in Kiev Oblast , was built in the mid-19th century. The well-preserved building is now used by a university of applied sciences.

history

The Great Synagogue (also known as the Choral Synagogue) was built from 1854 to 1860. In 1905 the building was renovated and a new Torah shrine was installed. Inside were small shops (or stalls) that were rented out. In the 1920s or 1930s, the synagogue was closed by the Soviet authorities.

After the Second World War , the rooms were used for teaching at a technical college. Extensive renovations were carried out for this purpose, with partition walls also being drawn in to obtain more rooms.

architecture

The building , built in Art Nouveau style , is almost square with external dimensions of 25.39 × 25.05 m. It is divided into three floors and 14.91 m high up to the roof ledge with a total height of 17.50 m. It is structured by pilasters in contrasting colors and a ledge between the second and third floors.

On old photos you can see that the upper floor was also square in the past, but much smaller. The outer walls were therefore not continuous, but clearly set back above the second floor. It is not known when these extensions were made.

Despite the renovations, the former structure can still be seen inside. In the main room, the men's prayer room, there are four pillars across all floors. Around this room there were galleries on two floors with the prayer rooms for the women.

Torah shrine and bima are no longer there.

More synagogues

At least three other buildings of former synagogues have been preserved in Bila Tserkva, but they are in a poorer condition.
