The Edirne Great Synagogue ( Edirne Büyük Sinagoğu in Turkish ) is a historic Sephardic synagogue that was abandoned between 1969 and 2015 and is located at Maarif Caddesi 10 in the Turkish city of Edirne . The synagogue, the largest in Turkey and on the Balkan Peninsula and the third largest in Europe after the Great Synagogue in Budapest and the Great Synagogue in Pilsen , reopened on March 26, 2015 after a restoration.

The Great Synagogue was built from 1906 by the architect France Depré under the Sultan Abdülhamid II , after a fire in 1905 destroyed all synagogues in the city. The synagogue was completed in 1909 according to the architectural model of the Leopoldstadt Temple in Vienna . In 1969 it was again the only synagogue in the city. It could hold 1200 parishioners, 900 men and 300 women.

The Great Synagogue was used until 1983, and the city has not had a used synagogue since then. Since 2010 the synagogue has been on the list for planned restorations of the General Directorate for Foundations ( Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü ). After the restoration, the synagogue was inaugurated again with a Jewish morning prayer, the Shacharit , in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç and the Chief Rabbi of Turkey ( Chacham Baschi ), Ishak Haleva .
