The Great Synagogue of Lyuboml in Volyn Oblast in Ukraine was built as a military synagogue in 1510 (or 1521) , making it one of the oldest synagogues in Ukraine.

The synagogue was a magnificent building in the style of the Polish Renaissance . It was in the shape of a cube , with the adjoining room being lower for the women.

Special engravings on the facade further enhanced the great impression of the building. The entrance to the main hall was decorated with two inscriptions from the Bible. There were three large windows on the sides, the arches of which also had inscriptions.

history

In the first months of the German occupation Ljubomls in World War II , the Jewish population was forced to the Torah scrolls to pick up and old books from the synagogue and burn.

An opening was broken in the wall so that the looted valuables and the clothes of the shot Jews could be brought there by truck for sorting and storage.

When Ljuboml was liberated in 1944, 51 out of 5000 Jews were still alive.

Although the synagogue was not particularly damaged, it was completely demolished by Soviet authorities in 1947 .

Trivia

In 1918 the Ljuboml magistrate issued a series of stamps with views of the city. The lettering was in the four languages Polish , Ukrainian , German and Hebrew . One of the stamps showed the synagogue.
