Great Synagogue (Sadagora)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Synagogue in Sadagora , a district of the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi , was built in the first half of the 19th century and later converted into a factory.

history

The synagogue, built in the first half of the 19th century, served as the town's main synagogue. After the Second World War, it was converted into a clothing factory by the Soviet authorities in the 1950s . The technical condition of the building is satisfactory, but due to the renovations, not much of the character of a synagogue can be recognized.

architecture

The building, built in the classicism style, is made of bricks and plastered. The external dimensions are 23.15 × 13.15 m.

Originally it consisted of the main hall (prayer room for men), the church porch ( narthex ) and the prayer rooms for women.

In the course of the renovations, a second floor was added. Both doors and windows were partly bricked up, partly others were broken into the walls.

Both the Bima and the Torah shrine are no longer recognizable.
