The Große Tonkuhle in Itzehoe is a quarry pond that was created through clay mining.

The bathing area on the bank is one of three bathing areas located on still waters in the Steinburg district , with the Lohmühlenteich in Hohenlockstedt and the Luisenbad in Schenefeld , whose bathing water is continuously examined for water quality due to EU requirements (see web link). The high nutrient input leads to increased algae and blue-green algae formation .

The clay pit is also used as a fishing water.
