Great kouros of Samos
The great kouros of Samos is an archaic marble kouros dating from around 600 to 580 BC. BC, which was set up in the Heraion of Samos as a consecration gift. With a height of about 4.75 m, it is one of the largest known kouroi.
The torso of the Kouros was found in September 1980 by a team led by Helmut Kyrieleis on the Holy Road in Heraion of Samos, the head was found in autumn 1984. Parts of the head, the left lower leg and the feet are missing.
According to the inscription on the left thigh of the kouros, it is about the consecration of an otherwise unknown ishe, son of Rhesis ( Ἰσχῆς ἀνέθηκεν ὁ Ῥήσιος ) in the sanctuary. For stylistic reasons, it is attributed to an Ionic sculptor who worked on Samos.
The kouros is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Samos , the capital of the island of Samos.
