history

Due to the convenient location on the salt road from Munich to Switzerland, the salt trade has had a great economic value since the city of Memmingen was founded. Various rooms had to be provided to handle the salt business up to the construction of the Großer Salzstadel. From 1470 to 1474, on the orders of the city council, the salt barn was built in the Staufer city, an old part of Memmingen, which was also known as the Kalcher suburb. The entire salt trade was handled in the building. At the same time, lounge, social and rehearsal rooms were set up on the first floor for various Memmingen societies and associations, including the Gesellschaft zum Pfannenstiel , the Memminger Meistersinger and the Collegium musicum. During the big bombing raid in 1944, parts of the Großer Salzstadel were destroyed and reconstructed in 1945. The southern part was severely affected, while the central and northern part did not suffer any damage. Today the Salzstadel is used for commercial purposes. A sports studio, several retail outlets, an amusement arcade and a restaurant have been set up.

use

The large salt barn was used as a salt barn on the ground floor until 1803 . The first floor was used by the Gesellschaft zum Pfannenstiel , the Memminger Meistersingers and the Collegium musicum as a social and rehearsal room.
