The power plant Wuerttemberg AG (GROWAG) was on November 4, 1921, the power plant Altwürttemberg AG (KAWAG) and the Überlandwerk Hohenlohe-Öhringen founded. From 1923 the municipal associations Enzberg and Heilbronn-Land as well as the Neckar-Enzwerke joined. In 1924, Lech-Elektrizitätswerke (LEW) , like KAWAG, an RWE subsidiary, also took part in a capital increase .
The purpose of the company was the construction and operation of electrical generation systems, in particular the operation of a steam power plant in Heilbronn , which was completed in 1923, as well as the forwarding and distribution of electricity and all the facilities and systems required for this.
In 1926, the company took a stake in Württembergische Sammschienen AG and founded the Vorarlberger Illwerke in cooperation with the state of Vorarlberg and the Oberschwäbische Elektrizitätswerke .
When it was commissioned in 1923, the coal-fired power station was technically almost out of date. The machines only had an output of 2 times 5000 kW. It was therefore shut down in 1930 and, with the exception of the first post-war years, only served as a reserve.
GROWAG was an important base for the Vorarlberger Illwerke built with RWE participation. The 220 kV line ( north-south line ) ran through GROWAG.
Großkraftwerk Württemberg AG was completely taken over and liquidated in 1954 by Energie -versorgung Schwaben, which merged into EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg in 1997 .
In 1954, today's Heilbronn power plant was built on the GROWAG site next to the old steam power plant .
