van Giffen no. O1

The large stone grave Steenwijkerwold was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic western group of the funnel cup culture near Steenwijkerwold , a district of the municipality of Steenwijkerland in the Dutch province of Overijssel . The facility was probably destroyed in the 1840s. The grave bears the van Giffen number O1.

location

The grave was located northeast of Steenwijkerwold on the De Eese estate .

Research history

The facility was first mentioned in 1781 by Petrus Camper , who also made a drawing. In the first half of the 19th century, probably in the 1840s, the complex was destroyed. Their remains were archaeologically examined by Albert Egges van Giffen in 1918 and again by Jan N. Lanting in 1985 .

description

Remnants of the mound are still preserved from this complex. The burial chamber is badly damaged and an exact reconstruction of its original appearance is difficult. Van Giffen stated their length to be about 6.5–7 m. Lanting's investigation, however, showed a length of 14-15 m. The chamber may have had six or seven pairs of wall stones on the long sides and one end stone each on the narrow sides. Lanting also discovered traces of a stone enclosure. Due to its size, like most large stone graves in the Netherlands, the complex was probably a passage grave.

Finds

During the excavations, shards of ceramic vessels of the funnel beaker culture were found. The pottery dates to around levels 3–5 of the typological system of the Western Beaker Group established by Anna Brindley . This corresponds to the period 3300-3075 BC. Chr.
