Concordia mine (Nachterstedt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Concordia mine was a lignite mine in Nachterstedt in Saxony-Anhalt . It belonged to the Central German lignite district .

The mine was founded in 1853 through the merger of several small businesses. From 1856, the lignite was mined in open-cast mining. A railway connection, a briquette factory and an electricity company followed.

Between 1899 and 1905, Nachterstedt was the lignite mine with the highest annual output in Prussia with up to 870,000 tons of lignite annually. From 1928 the old Nachterstedt was relocated. Similarly, Königsaue had to be abandoned. On February 2, 1959, there was a massive tilting slide. In 1991 mining was stopped.

The pit was flooded from 1996, creating the Concordia lake . A red buoy reminds of the place of the former church tower of Alt-Nachterstedt. On July 18, 2009, the embankment on the lake collapsed, and another landslide on June 28, 2016.
