Grundlovsdag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grundlovsdag (in German day of the Basic Law ) is the Danish national holiday on June 5th . However, it is not a non-working holiday. Between 1891 and 1975, Grundlovsdag was officially half a public holiday. Nevertheless, many shops and authorities close completely or earlier that day.

Already after the introduction of the Danish constitution ( Junigrundloven ) on June 5, 1849 by the signing of King Frederik VII , large gatherings and celebrations were held on the anniversaries. The constitution of 1849 established the constitutional monarchy and replaced the absolutist royal law of 1665.

Since the 1870s, the Grundlovsdag has increasingly been used for party political gatherings, which is still the case today. Each political party holds one or more events on Grundlovsdag.
