The primary school at Agilolfingerplatz (also: Agilolfingerschule ) is a more than 100 year old primary school in the Munich district of Untergiesing .

history

The primary school building at Agilolfingerplatz was built between 1905 and 1907 according to the plans of the city building officer Hans Grässel and was initially designed for 1700 students. The name of the school goes back to the noble family of Agilolfinger , the first Bavarian ducal dynasty. The elementary school at that time initially comprised grades 1 to 6 and was divided into a boys 'and a girls' school, which not only received separate lessons, but also had separate entrances. In addition, a kindergarten and after-school care center were set up right from the start, and a vocational school was also incorporated in the building. During the First World War , the pupils were moved to the elementary school on Columbusplatz , and the building on Agilolfingerplatz was subsequently used as a hospital for the care of war wounded.

During the Second World War , the school building housed various facilities: In addition to being used again as a military hospital, the school also housed a carpenter's workshop and furniture accommodation. During the night of September 6th to 7th, 1943, high-explosive bombs largely destroyed the building, only a few rooms remained usable. Classes were canceled for a year, and the after-school care center and kindergarten had to be relocated to other buildings.

Even after the end of the war, the destroyed building, in which only eight classrooms had remained undamaged, only allowed lessons of six hours per class per week. At that time, the number of students increased due to refugee children who were housed in barracks in the vicinity. Repairs made it possible to increase the number of available classrooms bit by bit, but a complete renovation and complete restoration of the building did not succeed until 1957, on the 50th anniversary of the school. At that time, the primary school consisted of 20 classes, and 60 vocational school classes were also housed in the building.

In 1968, according to a survey of parents, the school bathing introduced for hygienic reasons when the school was founded was abolished. From this year the gradual conversion of the previously existing elementary school (grades 1 to 8) into a primary school with grades 1 to 4 began.

The vocational school moved out in 1992, and the Greek school also left Agilolfingerplatz in 2001, so that now elementary school, kindergarten, after-school care, a lunchtime care provided by a parents' initiative and the “Kindertreff Akku” founded in 1958 ( Aktion Kommunikation Kultur Untergiesing ) use the building.

At the end of 1998, the City of Munich provided DM 36.8 million (around EUR 24,700,000) for the urgently needed general renovation of the building, which is now a listed building . Construction work began in June 2001 and lasted until November 2003. In the course of the renovation, according to the plans of the Munich architectural office Fischer + Steiger u. Partner Architekten mbB , the gyms were also rebuilt. At the Facade Prize of the City of Munich in 2004, the renovation of the Baroque facade was honored with an "honorable mention".
