Facade Prize of the City of Munich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Facade Prize of the City of Munich is an award given annually by the City of Munich for superbly renovated facades . The winners are determined in a facade competition in which all owners of historic buildings in the Munich city area can take part.

The competition and the award ceremony are not only intended to create an incentive for facade renovations while preserving the historical substance in order to preserve the historical cityscape, but also to awaken and strengthen public awareness of the art-historical, architectural and urban development importance of the facades of Munich houses .

history

The reason for the creation of the facade competition was the situation of the Munich facades at the end of the 1960s. Many facades were gray with age and blackened with soot. During renovations , architectural details such as B. Removed stucco , as they did not correspond to the taste of the time. The original character of numerous facades from the Wilhelminian era , historicism and Art Nouveau was destroyed.

In order to counteract this development and to contribute to the cheerful Olympic Games with fresh colors in 1972, the city of Munich created a prize in 1969 for facades from these epochs, with which successful facade renovations should be recognized. In 1970 the first Munich facade competition took place. The competition was later expanded to include facades of historical buildings in Munich up to and including the 1950s. Buildings from the 1960s can also take part in the competition if they are particularly outstanding in terms of architecture and urban development. However , it is not necessary to enter the building as a historical monument in the Bavarian List of Monuments .

While the prize was initially only awarded to private individuals, since 1988 buildings under public law have also been awarded a “Honorable Mention”.

Up to and including 2008, a total of 2,623 buildings took part in the facade competition, 765 of which received a prize. 117 buildings were given an “honorable mention”.

The Munich facade competition is an exemplary project to promote building culture and has become a model for many other cities in Germany.

The facade competition took place annually until 2011, then it was changed to a two-year cycle.

Procedure

All private owners of Munich houses who have carried out a facade renovation can apply to participate in the competition. Even public-sector owners can apply, they can achieve a "Special Mention" in place of the facade price.

The facade renovation must be completed when you apply and should not be more than a year ago. Besides renovated facades can also murals are entered for awards.

The facades are assessed by volunteer experts. The criteria of the assessment include originality, richness and maintenance effort of the facade, color design, artistic and craft quality of the execution and urban design significance. After hearing the panel of experts, the Munich city council decides on the award of the prize.

Award winners

Every year (from 2011 every two years) up to 25 facades are awarded. Each individual prize is endowed with 500 euros. For some of the buildings, the prize has already been awarded twice after a second, later renovation.
