A basic sieve is a metal container, usually a flat, rectangular, lockable metal bowl with a sieve-like perforated bottom, in which the general surgical instruments that can be used during an operation are stored. The instrument tray represents the surgeon's basic equipment . It contains a large number of scissors , hooks , clamps , tweezers and pliers , accessories for retractors , electrocautery and other items .

In contrast to the basic sieve , the special or additional sieve is also a similar-looking instrument sieve , but in which the special instruments are held that are required for certain interventions, such as the laparatomy sieve , lung sieve or thorax sieve , vascular sieve, incineration sieve, unitrac sieve , gall sieve , Shunt sieve or amputation sieve .
