Grupo Soweto or just Soweto is a Brazilian pagoda band from São Paulo .

Career

Grupo Soweto was founded in 1993 in the south of São Paulo by drummer Robson Buiú and his childhood friend Belo. The band was initially called Sob Medida and also consisted of the musicians Criseverton, Claudinho, Digo and Marcinho. Since there was already a group with this name, they decided on Soweto, after a song of the same name by Djavan . In 1996, the first album Vento dos Areais was recorded on an independent record label. Then Soweto signed a contract with EMI and produced the second album Refém do Coração with them. In July 1997, 15 days after the record was released, Robson Buiú was murdered during a robbery. From Refém do Coração, Soweto sold 100,000 records and won the first gold record. In 1999 the third album Farol das Estrelas was released. In 2000 Belo left the band to embark on a solo career. He was replaced by Enrique Bocão. Between 2003 and 2008 there were numerous changes in the line-up of the band. The band's greatest successes include hits like “Mundo de Oz”, “Chuva de Verão”, “Amantes”, “Vento dos Areias”, “Batuqueira”, “Sob a Luz do Sol”, “Queria te conhecer” and “ Dia Feliz ”.

Singer Belo

Belo (born April 22, 1974 in São Paulo), actually Marcelo Pires Vieira, was the front singer of Grupo Soweto from 1993 to 2000 and had a strong musical influence on the band. In 2002, Belo had to serve a prison term after he was arrested in Rio de Janeiro for drug trafficking. After leaving his band Soweto, Belo pursued a successful solo career.
