Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir ( Icelandic Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir ; * 974 , † in the 11th century ) is one of the main characters of the Laxdœla saga .

Life

Guðrún grew up with her parents, Ósvífr Helgason and Þórdís Þjóðólfsdóttir, in Laugar in Sælingsdalur . She is said to have been beautiful and clever.

Guðrún dreamed four dreams that indicated their later four marriages. In 989 she married Þórvaldr Halldórson . This marriage ended in divorce. Her second husband Þórðr Ingunnarson drowned. Most of the attention is paid to her third marriage to Bolli Þorleiksson . When Guðrún met Bolli, she was in love with his friend Kjartan Óláfsson. Kjartan and Bolli went to Norway. After three years, Bolli came back while Kjartan was held in Norway. Bolli told Guðrún that Kjartan and the king's sister were a couple. Bolli then made Guðrún a marriage proposal, which she accepted. When Kjartan returned to Iceland, he felt betrayed and married another woman. This ends the family friendship. Guðrún convinced her brothers to kill Kjartan and threatened Bolli to leave him if he did not participate in the murder. Bolli killed Kjartan (1003). But Kjartan's death was avenged and Bolli also had to die. After Gudrún and Bolli's sons grew up, they avenged Bolli's death.

In 1008 Guðrún moved to Helgafell and married her fourth husband Þorkell Eyjólfsson there. In 1026 he drowned, and Guðrún turned to the faith. She became known as the first nun in Iceland and built a monastery chapel on a hill near her homestead. Until her death she lived on the Helgafell farm, where she is buried.
