Guarujá do Sul is a municipality in the far west of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina near the border with Argentina . The distance to the state capital Florianópolis is about 750 km. Guarujá has around 4,858 inhabitants (2008) on an area of 101 km² - which results in a population density of 48 people per square kilometer. About half of the inhabitants live in the main town, the rest in hamlets and homesteads.

Guarujá do Sul was settled from the 1940s by descendants of German and Italian immigrants from the state of Rio Grande do Sul .

A wealthy entrepreneur in the area named the settlement just established after the seaside resort of Guarujá on the Atlantic coast of the state of São Paulo , which he liked to visit. When the municipality was officially founded in 1961, the name was expanded to today's Guarujá do Sul ( Guarujá of the South ).

In order to earn an income, but also to obtain space for agriculture, the settlers first devoted themselves to the timber industry. But trees are now scarce. These days the economy continues to be driven by agriculture. Mainly corn and beans are grown, as well as pig breeding and dairy farming.
