Guerra de la Liga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Guerra de la Liga was the second civil war in the history of Costa Rica , in September and October 1835 when Braulio Evaristo Carrillo was Colina Jefe de Estado .

Ley de la Ambulancia

The Ley de la Ambulancia was a law designed to apply the rotation principle to the government and parliamentary seat of Costa Rica. In 1834 the parliament decided to move the seat of government from Costa Rica every four years to the cities of Alajuela , Heredia , Cartago and San José (Costa Rica) .

San Juan del Murciélago

On August 27, 1835, the parliament decreed to build a capital in San Juan del Murciélago.

The plan of the capital in San Juan del Murciélago practically abolished the Ley de la Ambulancia , which led to a conflict with the cities that were intended to be the royal palace . Another moment of conflict was the abolition of a church tax, the Diezmo .

In September 1834, insurgent troops from Cartago brought a processional image of the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles to the church of Curridabat and set up their headquarters there. The cities of Alajuela and Heredia followed suit .

On September 26, 1835, the troops of the three cities of the League besieged San José.

3,000 government troops under the command of José Angel Soto camped in San Juan de Tibás.

There were negotiations before hostilities broke out. With the attack of the troops from Cartago under Máximo Cordero the negotiations ended. In one day, government forces beat Cartago troops at Cuesta de las Moras, Curridabat, Ochomogo and occupied Cartago.

As a result, the troops from Alajuela and Heredia withdrew to the north bank of the Río Virilla.

On October 18, 1835, the insurgents elected Nicolás Ulloa Soto as dictator of their league, who negotiated with the government. On October 24, 1835, a peace treaty was negotiated, which was not confirmed by the League, as it took into account the interests of Heredia and Alajuela but not those of Cartago. After the negotiations had failed, the troops from San José crossed the Río Virilla on October 28, 1835, defeated the troops of the League, occupied Heredia and Alajuela. With the surrender of the last troops of the League at dawn on October 28, 1835, the civil war was over.

Some league leaders went into exile, others received fines or imprisonment. The commander of Cartago, Francisco Roldán, was shot for handing over the city's garrison to the insurgents. In 1838 an amnesty was issued for those involved in this uprising.
