Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun (Hindi: गुलाब जामुन, Urdu: گلاب جامن) is a classic dessert from Indian and Pakistani cuisine . These are fried dough balls in flavored sugar syrup . Main component of the dough is Khoa or Khoya (boiled creamy milk). Milk powder or cottage cheese is often used as a substitute.

In Indian and Pakistani grocery stores, the dough balls are sometimes available as a ready-made product. Rasgulla ( Panir is used instead of Khoa ) and Ras Malai are similar, but partly made from different ingredients .

etymology

The word gulāb originally comes from Persian and translates as “rose water”, which refers to the syrup flavored with rose water in which the dessert is placed. In contrast, jāmun is a reference to the deciduous tree species Syzygium jambolana ( rose apple ) and the similarity in color and form of its fruits to the fried dough balls.
