Gumbass

Loy Ehrlich plays gumbass

The gumbass is a box- neck lute developed by Loy Ehrlich in the 1970s , which consists of the body of a Moroccan gimbri and the neck of an electric bass .

Design

The gumbass has a rectangular body that is covered with untanned animal hide. In contrast to the gimbri, the gumbass usually has four instead of three strings because the gumbass is often played by western instrumentalists. The tuning is accordingly that of a four-string bass E, A, D, G.

The gumbass has no pickups and is amplified by a microphone , if at all . The body can also be used for drum beats.

Musician

The inventor Loy Ehrlich of the music group Hadouk Trio is the most famous gumbass player. The gumbass is also used by street musicians.
