Hadouk Trio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hadouk Trio is made up of the musicians Didier Malherbe ( duduk , flute , ocarina , soprano saxophone , khene ), Loy Ehrlich ( keyboard , Hajouj, Kora , Mbira , Gumbass ) and Steve Shehan ( percussion , hang ).

The name "Hadouk" is derived as a play on words from Hajouj, a three-string bass (cf. Gimbri ) of the North African Berbers and Gnawa , and Doudouk , a traditional Armenian oboe made of apricot wood .

Music style and band members

The diverse music of the Hadouk Trio offers a jazzy mixture of oriental, African and European sounds. The band combines different style influences from the Caucasus to the jazz sound of the fusion era to the mystical Gnawa beat "à la marocaine" . This orientation arose from the rich cultural experience of the musicians involved, who moved and lived in different musical and cultural circles for a long time. The jazz magazine Down Beat has named a separate category for the unusual instruments : Miscellaneous Instruments .

The French multi-instrumentalist Didier Malherbe (co-founder of the jazz rock formation Gong ) and the Paris- born Loy Ehrlich (also a member of Gong) started as a duo in 1990, later joined by the American Steve Shehan.

  • Didier Malherbe studied the Indian bamboo flute for many years and then the Armenian oboe duduk.
  • Loy Ehrlich grew up in a middle-class milieu with piano lessons, Beethoven and Bach , befriended Didier Malherbe and played in the band Gong. In 1972, during a trip to Morocco, he discovered the sound of the Gnawa and the blues of West Africa for himself. During the intensive study of North African music, Morocco became a second home. He was a member of the band Touré Kunda and played with Youssou N'Dour and Peter Gabriel in Montreux .
  • Steve Shehan, son of an Indian father and a French mother, now lives in Paris. He worked as a drummer and percussionist with various musicians such as Bob Dylan , Paul Simon , Khaled and Salif Keïta .

In 2007, performances at the JazzFest Berlin and the European Jazz Festival at Schloss Elmau made the Hadouk Trio known in Germany.

Hadouk Quartet

In 2013, Malherbe and Ehrlich performed without Steve Shehan, but they formed the Hadouk Quartet with Eric Löhrer (guitar, lap steel, banjo) and Jean-Luc Di Fraya (drums, vocals) and released the album Hadoukly Yours .
