Gustav Kaitan

Gustav Kaitan , also Gustav Kaitan-Stelzer ( April 26, 1871 in Znojmo - after 1922) was an Austrian opera singer , theater actor ( baritone , later tenor ), singing teacher , theater director and orchestra conductor .

Life

Kaitan, the son of a kk Austrian regional court director, went to the theater after graduating from grammar school in Brno without actually having received any dramatic lessons. He began in Brno in 1891, then moved to Innsbruck and the Theater an der Wien , where he worked as a baritone until 1894.

Then he took singing lessons when his voice suddenly changed to tenor. He found engagements as an actor and singer in Teplitz, Innsbruck, Czernowitz, Olmütz, Munich, Bremen, Kiel, Liberec (1897–1899), at the Hannover City Theater, an operetta stage, (1899–1900) Berlin (Operntheater des Westens), to In 1900 he joined the Wilhelmstadt Theater Association, where he remained until 1902.

There it was especially the role of "Mitru" in the Dutch operetta The Red Cossack , in which he achieved an extraordinary effect and found general recognition.

He had further engagements at the Central Theater in Breslau (1903–1904), in Graz (1904–1906), at the Theater von Linz (1906–1907), again in Graz (1907–1908), at the Theater von Ostrava (1909) and at the Brno Theater (1910–1912).

After teaching as a singing teacher in Brno from 1915 to 1916, he was employed as a singer and actor at the Luisen Theater in Königsberg (East Prussia) from 1917 to 1918.

Then he went to Switzerland as a director at the city theater of Lucerne (1919–1922). From 1922 he was the director of an orchestra he founded.

His life after 1922 is unknown.

Kaitan, who enjoys a good reputation in the theater world, was successful in both opera (“Veit”, “Georg” etc.) and operetta (“Vogelhandel”, “Obersteiger”, “Eisenstein” etc.). In addition to his effectiveness as a performer, he also masters three instruments and does oil painting in his spare time.
