The Gustavianum is one of the older buildings at Uppsala University in Sweden . It was built in 1622–1625 on Domplatz, directly opposite the cathedral . In addition to a permanent museum and changing exhibitions, Olof Rudbeck's anatomy classroom can be visited in the dome .

history

The building takes its name from Gustav II Adolf , who had it built when the previous university headquarters were no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for highly qualified people for the emerging great power of Sweden . At the beginning there were classrooms, dining and reading rooms for students and a printing press in the Gustavianum. A library was added later.

The most noticeable change in the house took place in 1662–63 when the anatomy professor and polymath Olof Rudbeck had a dome built in the middle of the house with a sundial on top. In the dome is the Theatrum anatomicum , a round classroom with a dissecting table in the middle, which is surrounded by towering rows with standing room, so that 200 people could follow the action as closely as possible and with a clear view. During the fire in Uppsala on May 16, 1702, in which Rudbeck lost much of his work, he is said to have directed the extinguishing work from the roof of the Gustavianum.

Between 1778, when the old main building was demolished, and 1887, when the current one was built, the Gustavianum was the headquarters of Uppsala University. The library was moved to the new Carolina Rediviva building in the middle of the 19th century .

In 1935 the Gustavianum was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne . Until 1997 it was used by the university institutions for ancient history, since then it has been exclusively the Gustavianum Museum .

Usage today

The museum now houses collections of classical, Egyptian and Nordic antiques, as well as a permanent exhibition on the history of Uppsala University. A reconstruction of Rudbeck's classroom from the 1950s is accessible and is one of the top sights in Uppsala. There are also changing exhibitions.
