Guthrie Castle
Guthrie Castle is a country house in the village of Guthrie in the Scottish County of Angus , about 10 km east of Forfar and 29 km northeast of Dundee . The 19th century country house includes a 15th century tower house . Today it is in private hands.
history
In Guthrie Castle a Tower House was integrated, which Sir David Guthrie (1435-1500), Chancellor of the Exchequer of Scotland and Lord Justice-General , 1468 had built. The Guthrie family later had a house built next to the tower. In 1848 the two buildings were connected by an intermediate building in the Scottish Baronial Style according to plans by the architect David Bryce . The historic tower remained in the hands of the Guthrie family until 1983, when Colonel Ivan Guthrie died .
restoration
In 1984 Daniel S. Peña sen. , an American businessman, Guthrie Castle. In the years 1994–1995 Peña had the country house restored in the style of the 19th century and a golf course laid out. In 2003 the country house and the property were opened to the public; they served wedding receptions, corporate and group events. In 2017, however, the owners decided to stop these activities and to use their house again exclusively for private purposes.
Listings
Historic Scotland has listed Guthrie Castle as a Category B Historic Building. The garden was included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes . Several other facilities on the site are considered to be historical buildings of category B or C.
