Gwent: The Witcher Card Game ( Polish original title: Gwint: Wiedźminska Gra Karciana ) is a free-to-play online trading card game from CD Projekt RED for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is based on the card game of the same name ("Gwint" in the German and Polish versions) from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Gwent was announced at the E3 game fair in June 2016 and is currently in the open beta phase. The video game was released in 2018.

CD Projekt RED announced in December 2019 that it would discontinue the console sockets on June 9, 2020. Until then, however, players using the console versions will be able to transfer their game account to GOG.com so that they can continue to play the game on their PC.

Gameplay

The game is a turn-based, strategic card game between two players. The players compete against each other in up to three game rounds with previously created decks of at least 25 cards. The aim is to have more points than your opponent on the board by playing units, spells or other skills. Whoever wins two rounds first, wins. The specialty of Gwent is that the cards available in hand have to be divided over all game rounds. At the beginning of the first round each player draws ten cards, at the beginning of the second round three cards are drawn and at the beginning of the third round each player receives three more cards.

Players must pull phase during each play a card or suit . Passing ends the round for the player, the opponent can play any number of other cards. If both players have passed, the score is compared and the player with the most points on the board decides the round for himself. For the German version, all speakers from The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 could be won.

At the end of August 2017, the single player mode was first announced under the name Thronebreaker , which should appear in 2018. This follows Meve, Queen of Rivia and Lyria. This has not yet appeared in any game, but is known to readers of the book. While Gwent remains free-to-play in its online mode and when facing challenges , the single player mode should be chargeable. Its playing time was put at around 15 hours. At the end of August 2018, CD Projekt Red announced that Thronebreaker would not be an extension to Gwent . As a stand-alone solo game, it should appear as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and represent an around 20 to 30 hour role-playing game. Although the fights are to be fought using Gwent cards, there will be no further connection to Gwent: The Witcher Card Game . To appear Thronebreaker on October 23, 2018 for the PC, simultaneously with the Homecoming -Update for Gwent . The console versions should follow on December 4th.

cards

In Gwent , cards represent characters, spells or objects from the fantasy world of the Geralt saga and the Witcher games. They can be classified based on different properties. These properties have an impact on the abilities, the playability of the cards and the possibilities of deck composition.

  • Color (gold, bronze)
  • Faction affiliation (Monster, Skellige, Northern Kingdoms, Scoia'tael, Nilfgaard, The Syndicate, Neutral)
  • Type (units, spells, skills, special cards, weather cards, ...)
  • Row membership (close combat, long-range combat)
  • loyalty
  • Rarity

Since the beginning of the open beta, there has also been a premium version of every card. These are not stronger, but they are animated. To convert an existing card into a premium card, a resource called "meteorite dust" is required. You receive this as a reward for winning games, but you can also buy it in an in-game shop for real money.

Players can get additional cards by buying barrels of ores (in-game currency) or through microtransactions . Each barrel contains 5 cards, one of which is always of the “rare” type or better. While you get 4 cards automatically, you have to choose one of the three cards shown for the last one. These three always have the same degree of rarity. Cards can also be made with "scraps". Each card is assigned a certain value of “scraps” that must be paid for to produce. "Scraps" are obtained through victories, the scrapping of surplus cards or by completing certain quests.

Game types

Different multiplayer modes are currently available in Gwent . There is free play, ranked play, or you can challenge a friend. You can only play against an AI opponent as part of the tutorial or to practice. A single player campaign and skirmish mode (player versus AI) are also planned for the release of Gwent . The arena mode was introduced in 2018. In this, the player builds his deck from random cards from all factions. There is also the season mode, in which different rules of the game apply in each season.
