György Schöpflin (2014)

György Schöpflin (born November 24, 1939 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian politician of Fidesz - Hungarian Citizens' Union , author and political scientist .

Life

Schöpflin lived in England and Scotland (UK) from 1950 to 2004. After completing his studies at the University of Glasgow , he completed a master's program at the College of Europe in Bruges. From 1963 to 1967 he worked for Chatham House in London; then he worked for the BBC until 1976. Schöpflin has been a professor at University College London since 1976 , where he has taught at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies since 1998 as a professor and Jean Monnet expert. Schöpflin has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 . As an author, he has written several books on the political situation in Eastern Europe. In March 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from Tallinn University .

In August 2016, Schöpflin made headlines when he recommended in a debate on Twitter with a Human Rights Watch employee that the Hungarian border fence be equipped with pig's heads to deter refugees.
